We hate to break it to you, but if you are searching for ways to lower your cooling bill, you have turned into your father (or mother!).
Here are some tried and true strategies that your parents may have also used to keep the house cool during the summer.

Turn on the ceiling fan.

A ceiling fan helps disperse cool air more efficiently and may allow you to raise the thermostat by as much as four degrees without feeling too uncomfortable. But, of course, make sure you turn off the fan when you leave the room to increase your energy savings.

Use a programmable thermostat.

Increase the temperature in your home when you know you will be out to decrease your cooling bill. However, you might program your smart thermostat so that you walk into a house when it is at a comfortable temperature.

If you have lived in Kansas City for any length of time, you know how hot August can be. Many people limit their outdoor activities to the early morning or late evening because of the heat. And your home’s air conditioning unit definitely gets a work out during the dog days of summer.

1. Keep the doors and windows closed.

Do you remember how mad your dad used to get when you left your bedroom window open when the AC was on during the summer? If you were like most teenagers, you probably rolled your eyes at your dad as you walked through the front door (leaving it wide open, too.)

We see some of the same issues come up fairly regularly on our service trips . Some of the most common issues with furnaces and their resolutions are discussed below.

1. Carbon monoxide leaks. It’s one of the most dangerous issues with malfunctioning HVAC equipment. Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas that can cause physical harm and even death. A leakage occurs when something in the furnace fails and the gas is pumped throughout the duct work.

When there are low levels of the gas in the air, people exposed to it will usually have symptoms similar to the flu, including sleepiness. More serious levels can be lethal before you are aware of what’s happened.

It is recommended to place a carbon monoxide detector near the furnace. It’s wise to have several carbon monoxide detectors around the house because there can be more than one source of the gas, such as gas stoves, generators and other gasoline powered equipment and vehicles.
