Summer has been upon us for a while now, and the hottest temperatures of the year in Missouri usually begin in late June and can continue through mid-September. You count on your air conditioner to keep you cool, but what happens when you start hearing strange noises, your unit won’t come on, or the airflow seems weak? There are times when problems call for immediate action. At Schomburg Heating & Cooling we want to enlighten Kansas City area residential and commercial customers about what could go wrong, and when it may be time for emergency service and/or repair.
When temperatures soar above 90 degrees, you will need to call our expert HVAC technicians if your A/C blows warm air, will not function at all, or comes on only to shut off immediately. Otherwise, below are a few symptoms that could indicate a future breakdown or the need for service.
Unusual or strange noises. Buzzing, rattling, clanging, humming – some noises you become used to, but when you suddenly begin hearing sounds coming from your air conditioner that are not the norm, turn it off immediately. Some causes of strange or “weird” noises include compressor or electrical issues, or a faulty fan blade or fan belt that’s broken. Call your technician right away, as the damage could become more costly if you wait.
Inefficient cooling. Does it seem like the conditioned air in your home or business isn’t as cool as it should be? Perhaps it’s taking longer for the A/C to cool your spaces, or it isn’t cooling at all. When your cooling system doesn’t cool your indoor spaces as quickly or efficiently as it once did, it could be a sign of compressor failure, or it may simply be that coolant needs to be added. Call us at Schomburg if you aren’t sure what the problem is, and we’ll be glad to diagnose it for you so that any necessary repairs can be made.
Weakened air flow. A lack of air flow could simply indicate the filter needs to be cleaned or replaced, depending on the type of filter your air conditioning system uses. However, if you know the filter is clean and you’ve just replaced it and the air flow seams weak or completely lacking, it could be that the blower is failing or ducts are blocked. Avoid running your A/C when air flow seems weak, as it may cause your cooling system to shut down.
Any strange noises or unusual symptoms should be addressed right away, as delaying the diagnosis of the issue could result in more damage, meaning higher repair costs. Worse case scenario? Major damage could result in your having to have your heating/cooling system totally replaced. At the first sign of a potentially serious problem, contact the Kansas City air conditioning experts at Schomburg Heating & Air Conditioning.
