5 HVAC Tips for Spring

If you have lived in Kansas City for a while, you know how difficult it is to choose a weather-appropriate outfit each morning. The wool sweater that felt great when you first put it on may seem like a bad idea when temperatures rise quickly that afternoon.

Unfortunately, your HVAC system also has to keep up with fluctuating weather patterns – especially during the spring. So here are some HVAC tips to consider when you aren’t sure if the weather that day will require your furnace, your air conditioner, or open windows.

1. Be ready to turn on your AC.

We know that some of you already had turned on your AC before the recent March snowstorm hit. So, after the snow melts, go outside and take a look at your AC unit. Remove any debris that may have accumulated through the fall and winter and clean the coils with a garden hose or vacuum.

2. Replace your filter.

It’s important to change your system filter – regardless of the season. Some homeowners (at minimum) change their filter at the beginning of each season, while others do it closer to once a month.

3. Consider cleaning your ducts.

Spring is a great time to have your ducts cleaned. While some homeowners may wait several years between cleanings, there are several reasons why you should increase the frequency of this task.

If your home has recently been remodeled, consider removing the sheetrock dust and other debris from your ducts. Additionally, if you have recently noticed pests in or around your property, you might want to remove any traces of the critters from your ducts. Finally, other contaminants, such as mold, pet hair, and other debris, may have accumulated in your ducts since they were last cleaned.

While getting your ducts cleaned isn’t necessarily a yearly task, you might consider increasing the frequency if your family suffers from allergy-type illnesses.

4. Make sure your thermostat is programmed correctly.

Many of us have gone back to work, which means that you are leaving your home unoccupied throughout the day. Make sure your system thermostat is programmed correctly, so your furnace or AC doesn’t have to work as hard when no one is home.

5. Schedule your HVAC seasonal maintenance.

Finally, while there are many things you can do yourself to keep your HVAC functioning properly, the most important thing you need to do this spring is to have a professional inspect your system.
