What Happens if you Don’t Replace Your Furnace Filter?

The staff of Schomburg Heating and Cooling has been privileged to serve Kansas City homeowners since 1991. We aren’t only the premier heating and cooling company that serves the Northland of Kansas City to St. Joe; we are also your friends and neighbors. We know what it’s like to experience cold snaps that are so bitter that we dream of moving to Anchorage to get a reprieve from the low temps. We also know how miserably hot late August can be in Missouri and Kansas.

Because of the extreme temperatures that we experience as Midwesterners, we would like to encourage you to take great care in maintaining both your furnace and your air conditioning units. Not doing so may result in your unit malfunctioning at an integral time, which may lead to freezing and burst water pipes.

What can you do as a homeowner to keep your furnace and AC running smoothly? We have two suggestions: change your filter regularly and become a member of the Schomburg Comfort Club.

You know that you SHOULD change your furnace filter, but you may not know what could happen if you don’t take care of this home maintenance task. Here are some of the reasons that you need to put this job on your to-do list every two to three months:

If you don’t change your filter, your furnace will have to work harder to provide the same amount of heat in your home.

If dirt, hair, and other debris get inside your furnace, it has to work harder to produce heat. A furnace that works harder will not last as long as one that is well maintained. A harder working furnace also means that you have to work longer hours to pay higher energy bills. Not changing your furnace filter may cost you more money in the long run.

If you don’t change your filter, your home’s air quality will suffer.

Does someone in your home have respiratory issues or allergies? At a minimum, you should change your furnace filter often. Also, consider talking with a professional at Schomburg Heating and Cooling about a whole-house air purification system.

If you don’t change your filter, your furnace could overheat.

Furnaces with severely blocked airflow may overheat, which could cause devastating consequences.

We hope we have convinced you to change your furnace filter regularly. Consider buying your furnace filters in bulk, so you always have one on hand. Set a calendar reminder on your phone so you don’t have to rely on your memory to recall when you last changed it.

Also, join the Schomburg Comfort Club. Twice a year, our technicians will visit your home to check and replace your system filter. We will also check that your systems are running safely and efficiently. Our Comfort Club customers also receive priority service appointments when something goes wrong.
